About

Around the world people yearn to be free. Each man and woman desires to pursue their beliefs, to live out their faith. And all people have faith - a belief in who they are, where they have come from and where they are going.

freetobelieve.ca is an initiative by a group of people who are dedicated to pursuing the principle of human freedom – freedom to believe, to be, and to speak. This forum is intended to be a resource for those who are under pressure because of their beliefs. Our intent is to inform and encourage so that those who are persecuted will understand they are not alone and that it is not hopeless.

We know that this is a right that is misunderstood by many and opposed by some governments, religious beliefs and cultures. When Canada’s Prime Minister John Diefenbaker said,  "I am a Canadian, free to speak without fear, free to worship in my own way, free to stand for what I think right, free to oppose what I believe wrong, or free to choose those who shall govern my country. This heritage of freedom I pledge to uphold for myself and all mankind", he was expressing a common hope of all people. To be human is to have faith. Faith is as universal as breathing. Every one of us lives by faith and has a desire to believe as we choose, to live out that belief and to speak about that belief.

We do not stand alone. Multiple charter documents affirm the human rights of freedom of belief, freedom of speech and freedom to live. And so, we join with countless others who understand the great responsibility we have towards our neighbours – to treat them as we would wish to be treated.

freetobelieve.ca will be source for news about freedom. It will provide connections to those who can help. We will highlight courageous leaders who steadfastly stand to protect fundamental freedoms - not just for themselves but for all of us who are around them.

We have solved, by fair experiment, the great and interesting question whether freedom of religion is compatible with order in government and obedience to the laws. And we have experienced the quiet as well as the comfort which results from leaving every one to profess freely and openly those principles of religion which are the inductions of his own reason and the serious convictions of his own inquiries.
